Results of Sotheby’s Hong Kong April 29, 2022 Magnificent Jewels Live Auction

Sotheby’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels Part 1 Sale held in live auction format on 29th April, 2022, featuring 92 Lots bearing Lot Numbers 1801 to 1892 realized a sale total of HKD295,844,400 equivalent to US$37.7 million. A total of 58 lots were sold at the auction and as predicted top lot of the sale was Lot 1885 – A Highly Rare and Important “Imperial Green” Jadeite and Diamond Parure, comprising of a Jadeite and diamond necklace, a pair of earrings and a ring. The Necklace set with ten highly translucent oval jadeite cabochons of intense emerald-green ciolor, weighing 176.93 carats in total, was decorated with brilliant-cut diamonds set inbetween the jadeites. The Lot sold for HKD 46.4 million, equivalent to USD 5.9 million.

Lot 1841 titled Sotheby’s Diamonds – ‘Circe’ Fancy Viivid Blue Diiamond, Chalcedony and Diamond Ring, with an estimate of HKD 35,000,000 – 45,000,000 (USD 4,360,400 – 5,734,800), was the next top lot of the sale, selling within the estimate for HKD 41,515,000, equivalent to US$ 5.3 million.

Lot 1884 titled An Extraordinary Imperial Green Jadeite, Diamond and Gem-set pendant wiith an estimate of HKD35,000,000 – 55,000,000 (USD 4,460,785 -7,009,805) also sold at the auction, but well below, the lower estimate for HKD 24,575,000 equivalent to US$ 3.1 million.

The pendant is made of a carved jadeite pepper of highly translucent intense emerald-green colour, suspended from a brilliant-cut diamond surmount, arising from the lower end of the twisted black cord of the necklace. The sides of the jadeite pepper are accented with brilliant-cut diamonds. The reverwse of the pepper pendant is decorated with brilliant-cut diamonds, pear and marquise-shaped sapphires and a square ruby. Mounted in 18k white gold. The dimensions of the pepper jadeite are 57.00 x 22.00 x 11.15 mm.

Two unmounted round brilliant-cut, D-color, Flawless diamonds, one weighing 25.33 carats and the other 18.88 carats are the next two lots that did very well at the auction, both diamonds selling within the estimate, the larger diamond realising HKD 23.4 million (US$3 million) and the smaller stone HKD 16.5 million (US$ 2.1 million).

The next highlight of the sale is a colored gemstone lot, bearing Lot No. 1846 and titled, Sapphire and Diamond Ring – Designed by Nicholas Lieou, the Property from an Important Private Collection. Ring size 6, 18k white gold ring is set with an oval-cut Kashmir blue sapphire weighing 9.66 carats, highlighted by a two-tiered inner oval-cut and outer round brilliant-cut diamond surround, further enhanced by brilliant-cut diamond gallery and shoulders.

SSEF report no. 80758, dated 23 June 2015, states that the sapphire is of Kashmir origin, with no indications of heating.

AGL report no. CS 68335, dated 12 June 2015, states that the sapphire is of Kashmir origin, with no gemmological evidence of heat and clarity enhancement. The Lot sold wiithin the estimate of HKD 9,000,000 – 15,000,000 for HKD 10,660,000 (USD 1.4 million).

Lot 1868 – Very Light Pink Diiamond and Diamond Ring/Pendant with an estimate of HKD 8,500,000 – 10,000,000 was the next highlight of the sale, selling slightly above the upper estimate for HKD 10, 055,000 equivalent to USD 1.28 million.

Ring Size 6, 18k white and pink gold ring which can also be worn as a pendant is set with a pear-shaped, very light pink diiamond, weighing 16.01 carats, within a surround of round brilliant-cut diamonds of pink tint, furher hiighlighted by an outer urround of marquise-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds. The gallery and upper hoop of the ring are also set with brilliant-cut diamonds.

GIA report no. 5212415922, dated 3 February 2021, states that the 16.01-carat diamond is Very Light Pink, Natural Colour, VVS2 Clarity with Excellent Polish and Symmetry.

The next highlight of the sale was another Colored Gemstone Lot, bearing Lot No 1835 – A Sapphire and Diamond Ring, the Property of an Important Private Collector, wiith a presale estimate of HKD 8,500,000 – 10,000,000 and sold above the upper estimate for HKD 13,685,000 (USD 1.75 million).

The size 6, platinum ring is set with a cushion-shaped Burma blue sapphire weighing 26.08 carats flanked by two Trapeze-shaped colorless diamonds on the shoulders of the ring.

SSEF report no. 81933, accompanying the Lot, dated 25 September 2015, states that the sapphire is of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating; and the sapphire exhibits an attractive saturated blue colour with very fine purity, known in the trade as Royal Blue Color.

Gübelin Gem Lab report no. 0604806, dated 6 April 2006, states that the sapphire is of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating and that the colour variety may also be called “royal blue” in the trade.

LOT 1837 – Emerald and Diamond Pendent Necklace, by Van Cleef & Arpels was another colored gemstone lot that did well at the auction. The lot with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 6,800,000 – 9,000,000 sold within the estimate for HKD 8,568,000 equivalent to USD 1.1 million.

The centerpiece of the pendant is a step-cut emerald, weighing 83.21 carats, highlighted by a colorless diamond surround consisting of pear-shaped and marquise-shaped diamonds wiith a total weight of 17.66 carats.

The pendant is suspended from a necklace of length 41 cm made of platinum and 18k white and yellow gold, with makers mark for Van Cleef & Arpels, numbered with Swiss assay marks, and mounted with three rows of round brilliant-cut diamonds.

AGL report no. 1116901, dated 14 September 2021, states that the emerald is of Colombian origin, with minor clarity enhancement (oil-type).

Six GIA reports and eighteen GIA dossiers, accompanying the lot, state that diamonds ranging from 1.02 to 0.50 carats are G to I Colour and VS1 to SI1 Clarity.

The next highlight of the sale is also a signed lot by Bulgari, bearing Lot No. 1880 and titled Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond and Diamond Ring, Mount by Bulgari, with an estimate of HKD5,800,000 – 7,000,000 and selling slightly above the upper estimate for HKD 7,812,000 (USD 1.0 million approximately).

Ring Size 6¼, platinum and 18k yellow gold ring, signed Bulgari, is double-claw set with a cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant-cut fancy vivid yellow diamond weighing 17.03 carats, flanked by two trapeze-shaped diamonds on the shoulders of the ring.

GIA report no. 2221216828, dated 10 January 2022, states that the 17.03 carat diamond is Fancy Vivid Yellow, Natural Colour and VS2 Clarity.
