Topaz is one of the gemstones whose crystals can grow to enormous sizes given the appropriate conditions. The above list contains faceted topaz gemstones greater than 1000 carats in weight, arranged in descending order of weights. One of the interesting observations one can make from the list is that all the 15 gemstones listed are of Brazilian origin. This is not surprising as Brazil had been the premier source of topaz, of extraordinary sizes, in the whole world. The common colors of these massive gemstones are colorless, yellow, and yellowish-brown. There are five blue topazes also in the list, but most of them appear to have been treated by irradiation. The main source of blue topaz in the world had been the Ural Mountains of Russia.
Out of the 15 famous gemstones listed 8 are owned by the Programa Royal Collections, 5 by the NMNH of the Smithsonian Institution, one by the AMNH of New York City, and one belongs to the Portuguese Crown Jewels.
