Large Gemstone Order From Russia

The  National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA), Sri Lanka has received a large order of about 700 blue sapphire and rubies from Russia. The Chief Deputy Director of the Russian Finance Ministry, Mr Andre N. Katepow had inquired about the purchase of the gemstones from the National Gem and Jewellery Authority.

Since the onset of the current recession, the NGJA has been actively seeking for this type of orders.

The Chairman and CEO, Hasitha Tillekeratne noted that the request for the rubies and sapphires followed invitations to Russia, China and the Middle East to participate in the Facets 2009 Gem and Jewellery Exhibition.

Meanwhile three high ranking officials of the Russian Ministry of Finance have confirmed their visit to Sri Lanka for the purchase of the blue sapphires and rubies. The color specifications and the color gradings of the stones has already been received.

The 19th Facets of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan International Gem and Jewellery Show is coinciding with the visit of the Russian officials. Facets will be held from the 3rd to 6th September 2009 at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre. The NGJA also sees this as a great opportunity for the country to display its finest collection of gemstones and jewellery to the visiting Russian envoy.

The NGJA intends to open this opportunity to the trade by advertising in newspapers where members of the Trade would be requested to submit the gems to “N.G.J.A.”  for preliminary inspection and subsequently short listed dealers would get the opportunity to submit their stones to Russian officials for final selection.
