It is also considered among the top 3 fine jewellery fairs of the world. It is the biggest jewellery fair in Asia. A wide range of products were showcased at the Hong Kong Gem and Jewellery Show 2009 (HKGJS) which included gemstones, finished jewellery, pears, packaging displays, jewellery timepieces, tools, jewellery manufacturing equipment, machinery and polished diamonds.
The HKGJS is said to be the most internationalized trade fair in terms of the nationality profile of the visitors.
The organizers of the show UBM Asia Ltd held the fair at two centers the Asia World Expo and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. Similar categories of products were concentrated at the same venue. This made it easier for both the buyers and sellers to meet each other. This year over 3000 exhibitors from 44 countries participated at the show.
The National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) organized the “Sri Lanka Pavilion” at the show. The Sri Lanka Pavilion glittered with gemstones and jewellery from Sri Lanka presented by leading members of the trade. 29 Sri Lanka companies participated at the Hong Kong Gem and Jewellery Fair. They exhibited a wide range of high quality gemstones, calibrated gemstones and precision cut sapphires of various colors.
Although the global economic downturn had a serious effect on the jewellery industry during the first half of this year, the jewellery trade is now showing signs of recovery. Buyers have also started replenishing inventory in preparation for the holiday shopping season.
Many Sri Lankan exhibitors had successful business transactions. Some have also secured orders for fine quality calibrated sapphires and contract cutting.
A few important buyers accepted the invitation extended by us to visit “Facets Sri Lanka” in September 2010, and agreed to get in touch with the Show Organizers.
The National Gem and Jewellery Authority plans to organize “National Pavilions” at following international events in the later part of 2009.
