Gemstone Bazaar In Pakistan- A Big Hit

The gemstone bazaar held at Namak Mandi, Peshawar , Pakistan was a success and attracted a large number of visitors.

Over 30 exhibitors participated in the bazaar. There was a wide range of gemstones and minerals exhibited at the show which was organized by the Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company (PGJDC).

The show, the 7th of its kind in Peshawar was an effort by the PGJDC to promote the gemstone industry of Pakistan by providing a secure environment under one roof for trading gemstones. It also provided a rare opportunity for buyers by providing high quality gemstones at competitive prices.

Pakistan has large reserves of a wide variety of gemstones with properties at par with international standards. These reserves are located at North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Northern Areas.

An official of the PGJDC noted that  it is unfortunate that most of the gemstones are exported without value addition such as cutting and polishing which could bring in millions of dollars in foreign exchange.

He also noted that the PGJDC is working on several projects that would impart the necessary skills required by the stakeholders to provide value addition to the gemstones before they are exported. The “Gem Bazaar” was being organized in a professional manner by the PGJDC to ensure high security and transparency in trading.

Some of the minerals found in Pakistan include Aquamarine, Peridot, Ruby, Emeralds, Tourmalines (Various colours), Quartz (Many varieties) and various colurs of Topaz such as champagne, violet, pink and golden.

Examples of rare earth minerals found in Pakistan include xenotime, bastnaesite and Sphene.

Presently all minerals from Afghanistan also passes through Peshawar, Pakistan.

In February 2005 Sri Lanka and Pakistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for technical cooperation in the feild of Gem and Jewellery.
