The Sri Lanka Assay Office is located at the headquarters of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority- Colombo office.
Observer status has been granted to the Sri Lanka Assay Office by the Association of European Assay Offices (AEAO). It has also applied for membership with the International Convention of Assay Offices. The Assaying and Hallmarking Regulation of Sri Lanka was gazetted in March 2006. According to the regulations gazetted all jewelry manufacturers/traders should stamp the articles of jewelry offered for sale. The mark should also be registered at the Assay Office of the NGJA.
Presently assaying and hallmarking services provided by the NGJA are obtained voluntarily. However it would soon become mandatory for all jewelry items offered for sale.
