Sotheby’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Autumn Sale October 4, 2016 Registers a Total Sale of USD 25 million

Sotheby’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Autumn Sale was held successfully at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on October 4, 2016. The Hong Autumn Sale featured an extraordinary selection of exquisitely crafted signed vintage jewelry and iconic designs by renowned jewelry houses/designers such as Harry Winston, Bulgari, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Graff, Tiffany & Co, Rene Boivin, Buccellati and David Webb. A total of 198 lots were on offer at the auctions out of which 115 lots were sold, giving a percentage sale of 58% by lots. The sale total achieved at the auctions was HKD 192,653,750 including Buyer’s Premium, equivalent to USD 24.8 million. Most of the lots sold at the auction achieved a price within the estimated range, or slightly above the upper estimate, except some signed lots by renowned jewelry houses/designers, particularly a lot by Bulgari, an emerald and diamond demi-parure, which sold for a price, three times the lower estimate and 1.7 times the upper estimate.

Like Sotheby’s New York Autumn Important Jewels Sale, top lot of the sale was a colored gemstone lot, an “Important Ruby and Diamond Ring,” assigned Lot No. 1797 with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 15-18 million (USD 1,934,100 – 2,320,920). The lot realized a hammer price of HKD 15,080,000 (USD 1,944,415), which was within the estimated range.

The second highest selling lot of the sale was Lot 1709, a signed lot from Bulgari, titled, “Important Emerald And Diamond Demi-Parure, Bulgari,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 4.6-8.0 million (USD 593,124 — 1,031,520) . The lot sold for an enhanced price of HKD 13,880,000 (USD 1,789,687), which was three times the lower estimate of HKD 4.6 million and 1.7 times the upper estimate of HKD 8.0 million.

The third highest selling lot of the sale was Lot 1707, a “Very Fine Diamond Ring, by Cartier,” with a presale estimate of HKD 11-14 million (USD 1,418,340 – 1,805,160), that sold within the estimated range for HKD 13,280,000 (USD 1,712,323).The size 6 1/4, platinum ring signed Cartier, is set with a cut-cornered rectangular step-cut, D-color, Flawless diamond, weighing 13.60 carats, with excellent polish and symmetry and flanked by two baguette-cut diamonds on the shoulders of the ring.

The 4th highest selling lot was Lot 1704, an “Important Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond And Diamond Ring,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 8.6-12.0 million (USD 1,108,884 – 1,547,280) that also sold within the estimated range for HKD 9.68 million (USD 1,248,139). The size 5 1/2, 18k white and yellow gold ring is set with a 10.81-carat, oval-cut, VS2-clarity, natural fancy-vivid yellow diamond, accented with circular-cut diamonds.

The next highest selling lot was Lot 1705, a “Fine Pair of Unmounted Diamonds,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 7.2-8.5 million (USD 928,368 – 1,095,990) and sold for a slightly higher price than the upper estimate for HKD 8.6 million (USD 1,108,884). The two round brilliant-cut diamonds weighing respectively 5.96 and 5.86 carats, are both certified by GIA to be D-Color, Flawless with excellent cut, polish and symmetry. The D-color status of the diamond further confirmed by type classification reports that state both diamonds are Type IIa.

Lot 1788 – “Rare and Fine Pair of Jadeite ‘Double Hoop’ and Diamond Pendant Earrings,” with a presale estimate of HKD 5.0-6.0 million (USD 644,700 – 773,640) was the next highest selling lot of the sale. The lot sold slightly above the upper estimate of HKD 6.0 million, for HKD 6.32 million equivalent to USD 814,901. Each pendant earring is set with a highly translucent jadeite double hoop of bright emerald green colour, suspended from the surmount by an 18k white gold ring, above which is prong-set an oval-cut diamond each weighing 1.01 carats, followed by a hook surmount set with circular-cut diamonds. The diameter and thickness of the jadeite hoops are approximately 17.63 x 6.05 mm and 17.09 x 5.81 mm.

Lot 1672 is another significant jadeite lot that sold within the estimated range of HKD 4.8-5.8 million (USD 618,912 – 747,852) for HKD 5.72 million (USD 737,537 ). The lot titled, “Fine Jadeite Bead, Diamond and Ruby Neckace,” is composed of forty-seven translucent jadeite beads of emerald green colour, with the clasp behind set with circular-cut diamonds and calibré-cut rubies, mounted in 18k white gold. Length of necklace 57 cm (22.5 ins.) equivalent to a “Matinee” length necklace. Diameter of beads vary from 9.62 to 12.41 mm. Diameter of beads decrease from the front to the rear of the necklace. Hong Kong Jade & Stone Laboratory report certify that the jadeite is natural, known in the trade as “A-Jade.”

Lot 1781 is the 8th among the top ten highest selling lots of the sale. Titled,”Fine Pair of Diamond Pendant Earrings,” the lot had a pre-sale estimate of HKD 4.3-5.5 million (USD 554,442 – 709,170). The lot sold within the estimated range for HKD 5.36 million (USD 691,118). Each of the pendant earrings suspends a pear-shaped diamond weighing 5.10 and 5.07 carats respectively, prong-set on 18k white gold, and suspended by a loop accented with circular-cut diamonds. The loop in turn is suspended from a surmount claw set with a smaller pear-shaped diamond, and circular-cut diamonds. Two GIA reports accompanying the lots state that the pear-shaped diamonds weighing 5.10 and 5.07 caraats are both D-Color and Internally Flawless. Type IIa diamond type classification letters confirm the D-color status of the two diamonds. Smaller diamonds weighing 1.00 carats in total, have a color-grade of F-H and a clarity of VS.

lot 1777 is the next highest selling lot of the sale, titled, a “Diamond Bracelet,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 3.9-5.0 million (USD 502,866 – 644,700) and sold within the estimated range for HKD 4.76 million (USD 613,754). The 17 cm platinum bracelet is mounted with 28 emerald-cut colorless diamonds, placed side by side along their longer edges. Total weight of the diamonds 57.75 carats. 28 GIA reports accompanying the lots state that the diamonds ranging in weight from 2.00 to 2.49 carats are E to G color, and Internally Flawless to SI-1 clarity.

Lot 1694 is a signed lot by the renowned “House of Graff” titled, “Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond, Fancy Yellow Diamond, Fancy Light Yellow Diamond and Diamond Parure, by Graff,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 4.0-6.0 million (USD 515,760 – 773,640). Like most other lots, this lot too, sold within the estimated range for HKD 4.76 million (USD 613,754). The diamond parure comprised of a necklace, a pair of ear clips and a ring, with the same design features and using the same materials, yellow and white sapphires, mounted in platinum and 18k yellow gold.

The necklace is set with 26 graduated radiant-cut, fancy-yellow and fancy-light-yellow diamonds, 22 diamonds being placed in the neckchain, with 11 diamonds on each half of the median line, and 4 diamonds placed on the pendant like portion in front. The yellow radiant cut diamonds are mounted on 18k yellow gold. The radiant-cut diamonds alternate with floral motifs, each centering upon a circular-cut yellow diamond with four radiating petals set with pear-shaped colorless diamonds, except the floral motif from which the pendant arises, which is made up of three radiating petals. Total weight of colorless diamonds and yellow diamonds in the necklace approximately 79.20 carats. All diamonds are signed Graff and inscribed with numbers. The length of necklace 36 cm (14 ins.) falling within the range of a choker necklace. Twenty GIA reports accompanying the necklace state that twenty radiant-cut yellow diamonds in the necklace varying in weight from 1.10 to 4.34 carats are natural, fancy yellow and fancy light yellow, Internally Flawless to SI-1 clarity.

The matching pair of earclips in the parure, are each set with a radiant-cut, fancy intense yellow diamond weighing 4.08 and 4.04 carats respectively, mounted in 18k yellow gold , and each decorated with three marquise-shaped and two pear-shaped colorless diamonds, placed alternatively, and mounted in platinum. Total weight of the 10 marquise and pear-shaped diamonds in the earclips is approximately 8.65 carats. Two GIA reports accompanying the earclips, state that the 4.08 and 4.04 carat diamonds are natural; fancy intense yellow color; and SI-1 and VVS-1 clarity respectively.

The size 6 1/4, platinum and 18k yellow gold ring, is set with a radiant-cut, fancy intense yellow diamond, weighing 5.63 carats, mounted on 18k yellow gold, flanked on either side by a trilliant-cut colorless diamond. GIA report accompanying the ring state that the 5.63-carat, radiant-cut diamond is natural; fancy intense yellow color; and VS-2 clarity.

Most of the jadeite lots at the sale performed well, either selling within the estimated range or higher than the upper estimate. The following jadeite lots clearly show this trend – lots 1789, 1768, 1634, 1697, 1729, 1767, 1629 and 1666.

Apart from the top two lots of the sale, Lot 1797 – “Important ruby and Diamond Ring” and lot 1709 – “Important Emerald and Diamond Demi-Parure, by Bulgari,” some of the other significant colored gemstone lots that featured at the auctions were lots 1661, 1762, 1692, 1646, 1760, 1703, 1759, 1736, 1785 and 1741.

The 15.5 cm (6 ins.) platinum bracelet is set with 17 graduated octagonal natural Burma rubies weighing a total of 15.89 carats. Each of the rubies is surrounded by 4 marquise-shaped diamonds. Total weight of diamonds 22.56 carats, with an average color-grade of E to F and clarity-grade of VVS to VS.

The brooch centers on a step-cut, natural Colombian emerald weighing 22.21 carats, highlighted by 14 marquise-shaped and pear-shaped colorless diamonds, weighing a total of 22.54 carats and mounted in 18k white gold. Color-grade of diamonds D to G color and clarity-grade VS-1 to I-1.

Lot 1703 is a stunning Padparadscha sapphire ring, titled,”Fine Padparadscha Sapphire and Diamond Ring,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 1.95-2.40 million (USD 251,433 – 309,456), and also sold within the estimated range for HKD 2.24 million (USD 288,826). The size 5 3/4, platinum ring has a 11.68-carat, cushion-cut, pinkish-orange padparadscha sapphire as its centerpiece, highlighted by marquise-shaped, colorless diamond surround, with a total weight of 3.50 carats. GGL and AGL reports certify that the 11.68-carat, padparadscha sapphire is natural and of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) origin, with no indications of heat enhancement. The Padparadscha sapphire is pinkish-orange in color, with a medium low saturation, and a very good and lively brilliance. The surrounding diamonds are H to I color and VS clarity. An appendix from Gubelin Gem Lab states, “This extraordinary gemstone displays a harmonious balance of a pastel orange and pink as well as a very high degree of transparency.”

The size 6 1/2, platinum ring has a 6.25-carat, cushion-shaped Colombian emerald as its centerpiece highlighted by a colorless diamond surround, consisting of four marquise-shaped diamonds and four circular-cut diamonds.

Lot 1736 is a signed colored gemstone lot by Bulgari, titled, “Sapphire, Emerald and Diamond Ring, Bulgari,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 2.2-2.8 million (USD 283,668 – 361,032) and sold slightly below the lower estimate for HKD 2.0 million (USD 257,880). The centerpiece of the size 6 1/2 platinum and 18k yellow-gold ring is a 6.81-carat, natural, sugar-loaf, Kashmir blue sapphire, claw-set on platinum, highlighted by an alternating cabochon emerald and circular-cut diamond surround, mounted on 18k yellow gold, and a second discontinuous layer of circular-cut diamonds only, the diamonds being placed in line with the inner circular-cut diamonds. Weight of cabochon emeralds 1.20 carats and weight of circular-cut diamonds 0.90 carats. Color-grade of diamonds F to G color and clarity grade VS.

Among the signed jewelry one lot from René Boivin, Lot 1682 – “Diamond Bangle, René Boivin, 1940s,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 280,000-320,000 (USD 36,103 – 41,261) sold slightly above the upper estimate for HKD 350,000 (USD 45,129). The 18k white gold and platinum bangle with an inner circumference of 15.5 cm (6.1 ins.) is set with a line of graduated circular-cut diamonds along the center of the bangle. Total weight of the diamonds 8.50 carats; color-grade H to J color; and clarity-grade SI to I clarity.

Among signed lots by Bulgari, apart from Lots 1709 and 1736 which performed quite well at the auctions, other lots from Bulgari that also did reasonably well are lots 1606, 1723, 1771 and 1614.

The size 5 1/2, platinum ring signed Bulgari, is set with a 2.77-carat, D-color, VVS-2 clarity, pear-shaped diamond, flanked on either side by a smaller pear-shaped diamond, mounted on the shoulders of the ring . Total weight of smaller diamonds 0.60 carats, color-grade D-color and clarity-grade VVS – VS.

The platinum and 18k white gold brooch made by Bulgari around year 1960, is designed as a flowerhead, centering on a large circular-cut diamond weighing 1.10 carats, surrounded by six petals set with smaller circular-cut diamonds, six stamens set with tapered baguette-cut and baguette-cut diamonds, and a pistil set with baguette-cut and circular-cut diamonds. Total weight of circular-cut, baguette-cut and tapered baguette-cut diamonds approximately 7.90 carats. Color-grade of diamonds E to F and clarity-grade VS.

The 18k white gold bracelet is designed as a serpent, the flexible band composed of a series of panel links set with circular-cut diamonds. Total weight of diamonds approximately 9.00 carats; color-grade F to G color and clarity-grade VS to SI, as graded in the mounting.

Apart from lot 1707 – “Very Fine Diamond Ring, by Cartier,” which was the 3rd highest selling lot of the sale, there were other lots from Cartier that performed well at the auctions. Some of these lots are Lot 1749, 1719, 1645, 1603 and 1751.

Lot 1749 – “Rare Belle Époque Diamond Choker, Cartier, Paris, 1909,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 3.3-4.2 million (USD 425,502 – 541,548) was sold slightly above the upper estimate for HKD 4.28 million (USD 551,863). The 35.5 cm (14 ins.) choker length necklace, is claw-set with 20 graduated circular-cut diamonds, each within a hexagonal millegrain-set, small circular-cut diamond frame. The hexagonal millegrain-set, tiny, circular-cut diamond frames are linked by two millegrain-set, medium-sized, circular-cut diamonds. Diamonds are mounted in platinum. Total weight of diamonds approximately 60 carats. The bracelet is signed Cartier, Paris. Center diamonds ranging in weight from 1.40 – 6.00 carats. Lot 1719 – “Diamond and Gem-set Clip Brooch, Panthère, Cartier,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 640,000-950,000 (USD 82,522 – 122,493) was sold for an enhanced price of HKD 1,312,500 (USD 169,234) which was twice the lower estimate of HKD 640,000 and 1.4 times the upper estimate of HKD 950,000. The platinum brooch is designed as a spotted panther, holding an amethyst bead weighing approximately 4.00 carats. The body of the panther is pave-set with onyx and circular-cut diamonds, and the eyes are accented with emeralds. The purple amehyst is of medium saturation. Total weight of diamonds approximately 2.50 carats, color-grade E to F, and clarity-grade VVS to VS.

Lot 1645 – Pair of Diamond, Emerald and Onyx Ear Clips, Panthère, Cartier” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 590,000-800,000 (USD 76,075 – 103,152) was sold slightly above the upper estimate for HKD 875,000 (USD 112,823). Each earclip is designed as a spotted panther, pavé-set with circular-cut diamonds, and accented with onyx spots and emerald eyes, resting on an onyx hoop, suspending three drop-shaped emeralds, mounted in 18k white gold, signed Cartier and numbered. Total weight of emeralds approximately 2.20 carats, with a medium saturated green color. Total weight of diamonds approximately 2.80 carats; color-grade Ee to F color; and clarity-grade VVS- VS.

Another Cartier lot with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 320,000-480,000 (USD 41,261 – 61,891), but sold for an enhanced hammer price of HKD 812,500 (USD 104,764), which was 2.5 times the lower estimate and 1.7 times the upper estimate, is Lot 1603 – “Diamond and Emerald Horse Bracelet, Cartier.” The 18k white gold, 16.5 cm (6.5 ins) bracelet, signed Cartier and numbered, is composed of six pavé-set circular-cut diamond horses, embellished with emerald eyes. Total weight of diamonds approximately 10.00 carats; color-grade D to E; and clarity-grade VVS to VS.

There were three lots from Tiffany & Co. at the auctions :- lots 1743, 1617 and 1745. Lot 1743 – “Natural Pearl and Diamond Bracelet, Tiffany & Co,” had a pre-sale estimate of HKD 280,000 — 360,000 (USD 36,103 – 46,418) placed on it, but sold slightly above the upper estimate for HKD 375,000 (USD 48,353). The 17.5 cm (6.9 ins) platinum bracelet has a diamond-set central panel, with the two bands on either side set with 15 rows of natural pearls, with 3 pearls in each row, bordered by a row of baguette-cut diamonds. The clasps on either side are also set with baguette-cut diamonds and two large natural pearls in the center. Two large natural pearls are also placed at the beginning of the band, closer to the central panel. Thus there are 90 smaller pearls in the two bands of the bracelet and eight larger pearls, making a total of 98 natural pearls. The diameter of the pearls vary from 2.93 mm to 5.15 mm. The central panel is set with a large marquise shaped diamond, and several circular-cut and baguette-cut diamonds in an elaborate design. Total weight of diamonds approximately 5.50 carats,color-grade F to H; and clarity-grade VS to SI. GIA report confirms that the pearls are natural saltwater pearls, near-round in shape, body color white to slightly cream, with excellent luster, and some with rose and greenish overtones.

Tiffany’s lot 1743 above showed only a marginal enhancement of the upper estimate, but the company’s second lot, assigned Lot No. 1617 and titled, ” Gem-Set and Diamond Pendant/Brooch, ‘Fireworks’ Tiffany & Co.” with a pre-sale estimate of only HKD 55,000-80,000 (USD 7,092 – 10,315) sold for a much enhanced hammer price of HKD 187,500 (USD 24,176), which was 3.4 times the lower estimate and 2.3 times the upper estimate. The brooch designed in 1993 by Tiffany as part of its “Fireworks” Collection, with a bursting fireworks motif, has as its centerpiece an oval-cut, yellowish-green peridot weighing 9.00 carats, and the arms of the motif set with a central row of circular-cut, colorless diamonds, with a total weight of approximately 0.60 carats, bordered by circular-cut and oval-cut pink tourmalines, with a total weight of 5.00 carats, mounted in 18k yellow gold.

Some of the significant lots by Van Cleef & Arpels that featured at the auctions are Lots 1752, 1770 and 1622. Lot 1752 – “Turquoise and Diamond ‘Goddess of Moon’ Brooch, Van Cleef & Arpels,” had a pre-sale estimate of HKD 400,000-640,000 and sold within the estimated range for HKD 475,000 (USD 61,247). The brooch is set with a carved turquoise, representing the “Goddess of Moon,” within an 18k yellow-gold crescent, the center of the crescent set with a row of circular-cut, colorless diamonds. The well carved turquoise is greenish-blue in color. Total weight of diamonds 1.80 carats; color-grade F to G color and clarity-grade VS to SI.

Lot 1770 – “Diamond Brooch, Van Cleef & Arpels,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 250,000 – 350,000 (USD 32,235 – 45,129) sold for a enhanced price of HKD 437,500 (USD 56,411 ). This was 1.75 times the lower estimate of HKD 250,000 and 1.25 times the upper estimate of HKD 350,000. The brooch of floral design has as its centerpiece an old European-cut diamond, weighing 1.70 carats, of I to J color and VS clarity, surrounded by two whorls of petals. The smaller whorl of 8 petals are each pave-set with 7 circular-cut diamonds, and the larger whorl of 10 open-work petals are each set with circular-cut diamonds on the border and bezel set with a baguette-cut diamond in the open center of each petal. The diamonds are set in platinum and 18k white gold. Total weight of circular and baguette-cut diamonds 7.50 carats; color-grade G to H; and clarity-grade SI to I.

Lot 1615 – “Pair of White Coral and Diamond Ear Clips, ‘Rose de Noël’, Van Cleef & Arpels,” with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 65,000 – 85,000 (USD 8,381 – 10,960) was sold for HKD 162,500 (USD 20,953). This was 2.5 times the lower estimate of HKD 65,000 and 1.9 times the upper estimate of HKD 85,000. Each earclip is set with six white coral petals in a floral motif, and the center embellished with spikes of 18k yellow gold and six circular-cut diamonds, one diamond occupuing the center and the other five diamonds surrounding it. Total weight of diamonds 0.80 carats; color-grade G to H color; and clarity grade VS.

David Webb’s only lot at the auction, Lot 1625, titled, “Cat’s Eye Moonstone, Ruby and Diamond Brooch, David Webb,” sold without any difficulty, registering an enhanced price of HKD 200,000 (USD 25,788) over the upper estimate of HKD 160,000 (USD 20,630). The centerpiece of the brooch is a large hemispherical cabochon-cut cat’s eye moonstone, weighing 60.00 carats, with a distinct chatoyancy, surrounded by a narrow layer of prong-set circular-cut diamonds and a broader layer of cabochon-cut rubies, and an outer discontinuous layer of prong-set circular-cut diamonds, set against the line of seperation of two cabochon rubies. Since there are 20 rubies in the brooch and 20 lines of separation, there are 20 circular-cut diamonds in the outer discontinuous layer. The central moonstone and the inner layer of diamonds are mounted in platinum, and the rubies and outer discontinuous layer of diamonds are mounted in 18k yellow gold.

Hence, in general signed lots at the auction performed reasonably well compared with other lots.
