Richard W Hughes- Ruby Sapphire Expert Gets Award

According to the National Jeweler Network the world renowned gemstone expert Richard W Hughes will be awarded the 2010 Antonio C. Bonanno Award For Excellence in Gemology.

He is well known as the author of the book “Ruby and Sapphire”.

The Antonio C. Bonanno Award For Excellence in Gemology is an award by the Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA) in honor of its founder. The award recognizes people who have made significant contributions to the field of gemology. The AGA says that this year it is recognizing his scientific writings and articles in trade journals and his website ruby-sapphire . com. His travelogues have also contributed to advancing the profile of gem producing countries.

Presently, he is the senior vice president of gemstone acquisition and marketing at NCS Group in Bangkok, Thailand.

The AGA noted that Hughes who traveled to numerous countries in search of gemstones appreciated, understood people from different cultures. This enabled him to have access to the histories related to gem producing countries.

Previous winners of the award include C.R. “Cap” Beesley, Robert Crowningshield, Richard Drucker, John Koivula, Antoinette Matlins, Shane McClure, James Shigley, Christopher Smith, Henry Hanni ,Alan Hodgkinson and Alan Jobbins.

The Bonanno Award will be presented at the AGA’s Gala Dinner Dance, scheduled at the conclusion of the association’s conference in Tucson, Ariz., during the winter gems shows. The dinner dance is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, from 7:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. at the Marriott University Park Hotel in Tucson.
