Opportunities for Sri Lankan Gems in Russia- National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA)

The National Gem and Jewellery Authority Sri Lanka (NGJA), in a recent press release has noted the opportunities for Sri Lankan gems in Russia.

The press release was issued after the return of a  delegation to Russia, comprising of  an official of the NGJA and representatives of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA).

The delegation was in Russia from the 13th to 19th May 2009. The main objective of the delegation was to explore the market opportunities for Sri Lankan gemstones in Russia and to promote “FACETS 2009”. Facets 2009 is the Sri Lankan International Gem and Jewellery Show, which is to be held in September 2009.

Hasitha Tillekeratne, Chairman of the NGJA said that the dlegation had the opportunity of visiting “Yuvelir Vesna” and “New Russian Style” two of the leading Gem and Jewellery Exhibitions in Moscow. The visit to these jewellery exhibitions enabled them to get first hand knowledge on the current designs, marketing trends and pricing of gemstones, diamonds and jewelry in Russia.

The embassy officials of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Russia and the delegates also met  senior officials of the  Ministry of Finance (Gokhran) , Russian Chamber of Commerce and members of the Moscow Chamber of Commerce. During most of the meetings in Russia issues discussed were focussed around the importance of Sri Lanka as a source country for high quality sapphires for the jewellery industry in Russia.

Mr Tillekeratne also said that Sri Lanka has exported gems and jewellery to Russia worth Rs 50.13 million during the period 2005-2008.

The NGJA is also planning to organize a “Sri Lanka pavillion” at a leading gem and jewellery exhibition in Moscow next year.
