A +50 carat round brilliant-cut colorless diamond, only the fifth such diamond ever to be offered at a public auctiion during the last 15 years, set an auction record at a recent online auction.

The 50.03-carat, round brilliant-cut, colorless diamond sold at a recent Sotheby’s New York online auction for US$ 2.7 million, the highest price ever for a diamond auctioned online.
The 50.03-carat, G-color, VVS2-clarity, round brilliant-cut diamond, with excellent cut, polish and symmetry had a pre-sale estimate of US$ 2.5 – US$ 5.0 million placed on it, and was only the fifth such round brilliant-cut +50-carat diamond to be offered for auction in the past 15 year

There was competitive bidding between 11 individual bidders from seven countries for the rare diamond, which eventually sold for US$ 2.7 million.
Head of Sotheby’s Jewelry Department, New York, Quig Bruning, commenting on the record sale of this diamond, said, “the sale sends a powerful and positive message that online sales represent a key-part of our worldwide strategy and the white diamond market is still very robust.”
