The 35th Edition of American Gem Trade Association’s prestigious annual event, the AGTA Spectrum Awards™ 2017, an annual natural colored gemstone & cultured pearl jewelry design competition and the AGTA Cutting Edge Awards 2017, honoring creativity in lapidary arts, including faceted gems and pearls, carvings, and objects of art, was held in New York on August 5 & 6, 2017. The AGTA Spectrum Awards competition held under six categories and the AGTA Cutting Edge Awards competition held under seven categories attracted a record number of entries this time, of high quality, artistry and exceptional calibre, indicating the seriousness in which the annual competition is regarded by the participants and clearly demonstrating that the AGTA Spectrum Awards™ and the AGTA Cutting Edge Awards™ continue to be the premier design competition in the world.
The AGTA Spectrum Awards entries were judged on the basis of overall beauty and wearability, innovative design, effective use of materials, quality of gemstones, quality of workmanship, broad‐based consumer appeal and potential to generate positive publicity for natural colored gemstones.
AGTA Cutting Edge Awards honor excellence and creativity in lapidary arts, including natural colored gemstones and cultured pearls, carvings and other gem materials.
Among the 13 categories and 75 sub-categories under which the competitions were held, Sri Lanka colored gemstones have done exceptionally well and at least in three sub-categories carried the top honors. The three sub-categories are Classic Gemstone – 1st Place, Classic Gemstone – Honorable Mention and Phenomenal – Honorable Mention.
Classic Gemstone Category honors creativity in lapidary arts with special reference to the Cut, Color and Symmetry of the finished colored stone.
