SOTHEBY’S HONG KONG IMPORTANT JEWELS & JADEITE AUTUMN SALE, OCTOBER 12, 2017

Sotheby’s Auction House has announced the holding of a second Hong Kong jewels and jadeite autumn sale, a little more than a week after the holding of the much-awaited Sotheby’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels & Jadeite Autumn Sale on October 3, 2017. The second sale, christened the Important Jewels & Jadeite Sale, will be held at the same venue as the first, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, on Thursday, 12th October, 2017 offering a total of 211 lots and starting at 2.00 pm HKT. The auction will be preceded by exhibition of the lots at Hong Kong, beginning on Saturday, 7th October 2017 until Wednesday, 11th October, 2017, viewing times on all five days being from 10.00 am in the morning to 6.00 pm in the evening.

The lots include a range of jewels from the modern period, including bracelets, bangle-bracelets, brooches,earrings and earclips, necklaces, parures and demi-parures, pendants and pendant necklaces and rings, set with colored and colorless diamonds, a variety of colored gemstones, natural and cultured pearls etc. from renowned jewelry houses and designers such as Bulgari, Cartier, Christian Dior, Tiffany & Co., Vancleef & Arpels etc. as well as a set of 13 unmounted emeralds.

 

COLORLESS DIAMOND LOTS

 

LOT 9196 - DIAMOND RING, GRAFF
LOT 9196 – DIAMOND RING, GRAFF

Top lot of the sale is a colorless diamond lot, bearing Lot No. 9196 and titled, DIAMOND RING, GRAFF, with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 3,000,000 – 4,000,000 (HKD 383,370 – 511,160). Ring size 5¾, platinum ring, signed Graff and stamped Pt 950 for platinum and 9.01 ct, the weight of the center diamond, is set with an emerald-cut, F-color, VVS-2 clarity diamond weighing 9.01 carats, flanked on either side by a shield-shaped diamond.

GIA report number 2175349927, dated 21 January 2016, states that the 9.01 carat diamond is F-color, VVS2 Clarity. Estimated total weight of shield-shaped diamonds approximately 1.00 carat, average color-grade F-color and clarity-grade VS clarity, as gauged and graded in the mount.

LOT 9197 – DIAMOND PENDENT NECKLACE – HKD 2,500,000 – 3,500,000 (USD 319,475 – 447,265) is the second highest valued lot of the sale as well as the second most valued colorless diamond lot of the sale. The 41.5 cm platinum necklace consists of an oval-link chain, interspersed by three collet-set circular-cut diamonds on either side, suspending a pendant composed of a line of three square emerald-cut colorless diamonds, with the largest emerald weighing 6.77 carats placed at the bottom, the smallest emerald weighing 3.01 carats in the middle and the 2nd largest emerald weighing 5.30 carats at the top, to which the oval-link chain is attached on either side.

Three GIA reports bearing numbers 2181099387, 5172537020, 5181522342, dated 9 January 2017, 8 December 2016 and 14 June 2017 in respect of diamonds 6.77 ct, 5.30 ct and 3.01 ct respectively, state that the three diamonds are all E-color and VVS-2 Clarity, with the first two diamonds of excellent polish and symmetry. The oval-link chain stamped Pt950 for platinum.Estimated total weight of circular-cut diamonds approximately 0.60 carat, average color-grade E to F color and average clarity-grade VS clarity, as gauged and graded in the mount.

LOT 9210 – DIAMOND, ONYX, RUBY AND EMERALD PENDENT NECKLACE, ‘PANTHÈRE’, CARTIER – with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 1,600,000 – 2,200,000 (HKD 204,464 – 281,138) is another important highlight and diamond lot of the sale. The 41 cm necklace signed Cartier, numbered 30097B, with French assay and maker’s marks, suspends a pendent designed as a pavé-set circular-cut diamond panther with black onyx spots and emerald eyes, resting on an black onyx hoop, from a link-chain set with circular-cut diamonds and cabochon rubies. The link-chain is composed of pavé-set circular diamond triplets, separated by alternating collet-set circular-cut diamonds and cabochon rubies.

Ring size 6¼ platinum ring is claw-set with a cushion-shaped, D-color, Flawless clarity diamond weighing 4.00 carats, flanked on either side by a half-moon shaped diamond on the shoulders of the ring.

GIA report number 5171962900, dated 3 January 2017, states that the 4.00 carat diamond is D-color, Flawless, with Excellent Polish and Symmetry. The ring stamped Ivanka Trump, a reference to the makers Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry, is numbered 0080 and bears markings PT950 for platinum. Estimated total weight of half-moon shaped diamonds approximately 0.60 carat; average color-grade E color, clarity-grades VS & SI, as gauged and graded in the mount.

The Jadeite Pendant is composed of a highly translucent jadeite hoop of bright emerald green color, suffused with intense emerald green streaks, with a circular-cut diamond-set boule surmount made of white gold, through which the black cord of the necklace passes, Dimensions of the hoop are approximately 22.61 x 4.30 x 6.73 mm.

Ring size 5¾, 18k white gold ring is set with an oval jadeite double cabochon of bright green color and very good translucency, highlighted by a two-layered diamond surround on the edge of the gallery, pave-set with circular-cut diamonds, and the bifurcated shoulders also set with circular-cut diamonds. Dimensions of Cabochon approximately 17.68 x 14.17 x 9.95 mm.

Hong Kong Jade & Stone Laboratory certificate number KJ 96008, dated 11 July 2017, states that the jadeite is natural, known in the trade as “A Jade”. Jadeite double cabochon of even tone, very good translucency and bright green color. Upon strong illumination, there are minor faint clouds and a few internal fissures with one lightly surface reaching, but all not visible under normal lighting. Estimated total weight of diamonds approximately 0.70 carat, average color-grade G to H colour, clarity-grade VS, as gauged and graded in the mount.

Each of the lavender jadeite bangles is translucent, circular and cylindrical, with inner circumference and diameter of approximately 55.67 mm & 11.21 mm and 55.43 mm & 12.07 mm respectively.

Two Hong Kong Jade & Stone Laboratory certificates numbered SJ 154849 and SJ 154850, both dated 3 August 2017, state that the jadeite are natural, known in the trade as “A Jade”. Both bangles are of translucent material and light to medium lavender color. Upon strong illumination, the bangles suffused with clouds, one with two tiny dark specks. Overall the bangles are in very good condition.

 

SAPPHIRE LOTS

Lot 9209 is the top highlight of Sapphire lots and the sixth highest valued lot of the sale, with an estimate of HKD 1,500,000 – 2,000,000 (USD 191,685 — 255,580) and titled SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND RING, CARTIER. Ring size 6¼ platinum ring signed Cartier, numbered 704149 and stamped pt950 for platinum and 53 referring to the European ring size, is claw-set with a cushion-shaped blue sapphire weighing approximately 13.50 carats, each of the four platinum prongs set with a circular-cut diamond. The shoulders and upper hoop of the ring set with baguette-cut diamonds.

GIA report number 7178863776, dated 13 August, 2016, states that the sapphire is of Sri Lankan origin with no indications of heating. Sapphire stated to weigh approximately 25.60 carats is of medium light blue colour with moderate saturation. Typical inclusions visible under 10X magnification, but minor surface reaching inclusions and nicks not visible without loupe. Estimated total weight of diamonds approximately 1.91 carats; average color-grade G to H color, average clarity-grade VS to SI clarity as gauged and graded in the mounting.

Ring size 6¼, 18k white and blackened gold ring, stamped 750 for 18k white and blackened gold, and inscribed 21.66, referring to the weight of the sapphire, is set with a cut-cornered rectangular step-cut sapphire weighing 21.66 carats, flanked by two shield-shaped diamonds, decorated with circular-cut diamonds and black diamonds.

GGL report number 9911116, dated 30 November 1999, states that the sapphire is natural, of Sri Lankan (Ceylon) origin, with indications of thermal enhancement. Sapphire violetish-blue of medium light saturation, with minor typical inclusions and a few surface reaching. Estimated total weight of circular-cut and black diamonds approximately 2.80 carats; shield-shaped diamonds are about J to K color, SI clarity; circular-cut diamonds are on average H to I color, mainly VS clarity; as gauged and graded in the mount.

Ring size 6, white and yellow gold ring is set with a cushion-shaped ruby weighing 3.10 carats, decorated with a diamond-set gallery, flanked by a flower with oval-cut diamond petals and circular-cut ruby center. The shoulders of the ring are also set with colorless diamonds. Total weight of colorless diamonds approximately 3.40 carats.

LOT 9113 – RUBY BEAD AND DIAMOND NECKLACE, MICHELE DELLA VALLE – with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 800,000 – 1,200,000 (USD 102,232 – 153,348) is the second highest value ruby lot of the sale. The 88 cm opera length five-strand graduated ruby bead necklace, signed MdV, has diamond-set rondelles placed at irregular intervals on the strands, embellished with four lozenge-shaped frames, placed symmetrically on either side of the necklace, the periphery of the frame being set with a row of circular-cut colorless diamonds, mounted in 18k white gold. Total approximate weight of rubies and diamonds 2,100.00 carats and 12.00 carats respectively.

The rubies are pinkish to purplish-red color of medium saturation, with typical surface reaching inclusions, some nicks, minor chips and a few tiny cavities, but all are not noticeable when worn. Estimated total weight of diamonds approximately 12.00 carats, diamonds on lozenge frames are on average F to G color, diamonds on rondelles are about J to K and M to N color, all having average clarity grade of VS to SI, as gauge and graded in the mount.

 

LOT 9189 - STAR RUBY AND DIAMOND RING

LOT 9189 – STAR RUBY AND DIAMOND RING – with an estimate of HKD 400,000 – 500,000 (USD 51,116 – 63,895) is a significant Star Ruby lot of the sale. Ring size 6, 18k white gold ring of crossover design, is set with two cabochon Burma star rubies weighing 5.31 and 5.05 carats respectively, with circular-cut diamond-set surrounds and shoulders. Rubies are pink to pinkish-red, of medium saturation and prominent and excellent asterism, with typical inclusions, some surface reaching.

Two AGL reports numbered CS 84958 and CS 84960, both dated 24 September 2015, state that the star rubies are natural, with no gemological evidence of heat treatment. AGL further comments that the strength and quality of the star in both rubies are prominent and excellent. GGL report numbered 17097361, dated 17 September 2017, states that both pink star sapphires are natural, of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating. GGL further comments that the gemstones display a sharp and well centered asterism (star effect), that may also be called “star ruby” in the trade. The ring is inscribed 18K and 750 for 18 karat white gold, and S 5.05, S 5.31 and d 0.89 referring to the weights of the rubies and diamonds. Diamonds are on average H to J color, VS to SI clarity, as graded in the mount.

 

EMERALD LOTS

Ring size 6, platinum ring is set with a cut-cornered rectangular step-cut Colombian emerald weighing 5.31 carats, flanked on either side by a trapeze-cut diamond on the shoulders of the ring. The ring is inscribed PT950 for platinum, and 5.31ct and D1.56ct referring to the weight of the emerald and total weight of trapeze diamonds.

SSEF and AGL reports numbered 87100 and CS 64445, dated 2 August 2016 and 20 November 2014 respectively, state that the emerald is natural, of Colombian origin, with no indications of clarity modification. An updated SSEF report numbered 95407, dated September 2017, also states that the emerald has no indication of clarity modification. The emerald is green of medium strong saturation, with moderate typical inclusions with a few very minor surface reaching and a tiny chip at the girdle and a few nicks. Diamonds are on average I to J color, VS clarity, as gauged and graded in the mount.

 

LOT 9204 - THIRTEEN UNMOUNTED EMERALDS
LOT 9204 – THIRTEEN UNMOUNTED EMERALDS

 

LOT 9204 – THIRTEEN UNMOUNTED EMERALDS – with an estimate of HKD 900,000 – 1,200,000(USD 115,011 – 153,348) is the second most valued emerald lot of the sale. The emeralds from the estate of a private Asian collector, consists of 13 loose emeralds of Colombian origin, ranging in weight from 2.81 carats to 16.99 carats and a total weight of 118.52 carats.

GGL report numbered 17071060, dated 31 July 2017, states that the emeralds ranging from 2.81 to 16.99 carats are all natural and of Colombian origin, with indications of minor clarity enhancement. The Emeralds are green color of medium to medium strong saturation, well-matched, with typical inclusions, some surface reaching and some nicks and minor chips. In the circular arrangement depicted in the image, matching emeralds of comparable size and shape are placed in symmetrical positions on either side of the median line, in which the largest emerald is situated in the front and the smallest in the rear. Hence, the emeralds are ideal for the creation of an emerald and diamond necklace, by a creative jewelry designer.

LOT 9056 – EMERALD AND DIAMOND PENDENT NECKLACE – is another emerald highlight with an estimate of HKD 550,000 – 750,000 (USD 70,285 – 95,842). The 41 cm, 18k and 14k necklace suspends a pendant with a cushion-shaped emerald weighing approximately 18.91 carats as centerpiece, surrounded by three rows of diamonds, assuming the cushion shape of the central emerald, the innermost row set with baguette-cut diamonds; the middle row set with circular-cut diamonds; and the outermost row again set with baguette-cut diamonds. A pear-shaped diamond is placed above and below the cushion-shaped emerald, outside the innermost row and the dome-shaped motif above and below the pear-shaped diamonds are also set with circular-cut diamonds. While the dome-shaped motif above is connected to the necklace set with circular-cut diamonds with a secure clasp behind, the dome-shaped motif below suspends a pear-shaped emerald weighing approximately 2.00 carats, surrounded by a row of circular-cut diamonds. Total weight of circular-cut, baguette-cut and pear-shaped diamonds in the necklace is approximately 10.00 carats.

LOT 9056 – PENDANT OF THE EMERALD AND DIAMOND NECKLACE ENLARGED

GGL report numbered 17081013, dated 8 August 2017, states that the 18.91 carat emerald is natural, of Colombian origin, with indications of moderate clarity enhancement. The emeralds are medium green with very good saturation, with typical inclusions, some surface reaching, minor nicks and abrasions when examined under 10X magnification. Estimated total weight of diamonds approximately 10 carats; average color-grade G to H color, and clarity-grade SI, as gauged and graded in the mount.

ALEXANDRITE LOT

LOT 9162 – PAIR OF ALEXANDRITE AND DIAMOND EARRINGS – with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 100,000 – 150,000 (USD 12,779 – 19,168) is one of the two alexandrite lots at the auction. The platinum and 18k white gold earrings with post and hinged back fittings, are each set with an oval-cut alexandrite as centerpiece, weighing respectively 1.30 and 1.12 carats surrounded by a row of 10 circular-cut alexandrites, and further highlighted by wavy outer row of colorless circular-cut diamonds, the crests of the waves coinciding with the position of the inner circular-cut alexandrites.

Two GGL reports bearing numbers 0810066 and 0810067, and both dated 5 November 2008, state that the 1.30 and 1.12 carat alexandrites are natural and of Brazilian origin displaying a pronounced color-change. The alexandrites are of medium dark tone and medium strong saturation, well-matched and loupe-clean and display a strong color-change phenomenon, from bluish green in daylight to purple under incandescent light. The earrings are inscribed with PT950 and 750 for platinum and 18k white gold. Also inscribed with A1.30ct, A1.12ct, A1.57ct, referring to the weights of the central oval-shaped alexandrites and total weight of 20 circular-cut smaller alexandrites and D0.30 ct, referring to the total weight of circular-cut diamonds. Average color-grade of diamonds H to I color and clarity-grade VS, as graded in the mount.

 

AMETHYST LOT

LOT-9067 – GROUP OF JEWELRY, CARTIER – with an estimate of HKD 30,000 – 50,000 (USD 3,834 – 6,389) is an interesting lot by Cartier. The group of jewelry by Cartier, comprises an 18k pink gold “Menotte” hinged bangle and a ring, each embellished with two cone-shaped amethysts; a “Double C” bangle in 18k white, yellow and pink gold; and a brooch, designed as a mother elephant of polished 18k yellow gold and her calf pavé-set with circular-cut diamonds on 18k pink gold, each enhanced by emerald eye, mounted in 18 karat yellow gold.

“Menotte” bangle numbered BN7080 and ring numbered BO6943, both signed Cartier, with French maker’s marks and inscribed 750 for 18k pink gold. The ring inscribed 57 referring to the European ring size. Estimated total weight of four cone-shaped amethysts approximately 2.00 carats. Purple color of amethysts medium saturation. “Double C” bangle, signed Cartier and inscribed CARTIER 1997, numbered F13924, with French assay mark for gold and French marker’s marks, inscribed 750 for 18 karat pink, white and yellow gold. Brooch, signed Cartier and numbered 772820, with French assay mark for gold and French maker’s mark, inscribed 750 for 18 karat yellow gold. Emerald, green of medium strong saturation. Diamonds estimated to weigh approximately 0.15 carat in total, are on average E to F color, VVS to VS clarity, as gauged and graded in the mount.
