Chinese buyers mesmerized by the splendor of Sri Lankan Sapphires

Mr. Prasad Galhena, Chairman / C.E.O. of the National Gem & Jewellery Authority (NGJA) stated that the NGJA with the collaboration of Sri Lanka Consulate in Shanghai has organized the ‘ Sri Lanka Pavilion’ at the China International Gold, Jewellery & Gem Fair for its seventh consecutive year at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center. The Sri Lanka Pavilion consists of twenty (20) Sri Lankan Gem and Jewllery Trading Companies.

The China International Gold Jewellery and Gem Fair is a premier event dedicated to the booming jewellery market in China. This event hosts jewellery makers from different parts of the country allowing them to display a variety of exquisite pieces in gold and precious gems. It seeks to promote the jewellery making trade in the country, highlighting the economic progress that has come to define Chinese domination of the world economy in the last decade. Boosted by rapid growth in the retail market and in the overall economy in recent years, shanghai is one of the wealthiest cities in China, one where there is high demand for luxuary goods, fine jewellery in particular. Shanghai, therefore has become the gateway for overseas enterprises to enter the vast China Market. Therefore Shanghai as the Commercial City of China has amazing consumption market and trading environment for Gems and Jewellery.

A vast variety of magnificent jewellery products of excellent craftsmanship showcased at the four day event included glistering gold jewellery, fashionable platinum and silver jewellery, prestigious pearl, diamond, jade and gemset jewellery, fine diamonds and fine quality gems. Packaging and display materials and related products and services were also displayed, making it a highly professional platform for the jewellery industry.
The Exhibition was ceremonially started on 9th November 2012 with the participation of Mr.W.H.M. Nimal Bandara, Director General of NGJA and Mrs. Hasanthi Dissanayake, Consul General of Sri Lanka Consulate in Shanghai. Mrs. Hasanthi Dissanayake the Consul General of Sri Lanka Consulate in Shanghai stated in her speech the Sri Lanka Consulate in Shanghai, National Gem and Jewellery Authority and Sri Lanka Gem & Jewellery Association intend to work closely with the Gem & Jewellery Traders Association of China to build up strong Platform for the Gem and Jewellery trading community in Sri Lanka. She further stated that the close relationship which the government build up with the Chinese government help them to increase business activities in China. The NGJA with the assistance of Consulate has embarked on an intense campaign to promote Sri Lanka ‘Coloured Gem Stones’ in the fast expanding Chinese market.

The four-day event, organized by UBM China Ltd, the China Gold Association, and the Shanghai STEO Exhibition Co Ltd, features a good mix of participants from around the Globe. Continuing last year’s success, this year event attracted over 410 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions and attracted 8,493 visitors in total including Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Nepal, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Thailand, USA, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan regions with in a space of 17,000 sq.m. to feature their exclusive products.
Mr. W.H.M. Nimal Bandara, Director General of NGJA emphasized that the ‘National Pavilion’ which displayed a glittering array of Gems and Jewellery from Sri Lanka presented by twenty members of the trade attracted buyers from China and other leading consuming countries. The members of the “National Pavilion” were successful in securing orders for fine quality gems calibrated sapphires and fine jewellery and establishing its position as the leading producer of fine quality Blue Sapphire to the global market.
Mr. Bandara and Mrs. Dissanayake visited the ‘Sri Lanka Pavilion’ and inspired the participants, and congratulated ‘NGJA’ for continuing National Pavilion concept.

Mr. Galhena further stated that the NGJA considers facilitation of Sri Lankan Gem and Jewellery Trading Community for participation in international Trade Fairs through out the world as its major promotional activity. Due to the importance of Chinese market NGJA has scheduled to organize Sri Lanka Pavilion in another leading international gem and jewellery exhibition in China – Beijing during the month of December.
Mr. Prasad Galhena added that the National Gem and Jewellery Authority have identified the market requirements and created a strong platform for fine quality gems and gem studded jewellery of Sri Lanka in China.
