BONHAMS LOS ANGELES “CALIFORNIA JEWELS” SALE OFFERS OVER 500 LOTS ON 12TH AND 13TH SEPTEMBER, 2018

Bonhams Los Angeles, “California Jewels” auction is due to be held at their 7601 W. Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles CA 90046, Sales Center on 12th and 13th September, 2018 starting at 10.000 PDT on each day. The auction will be preceded by viewings of the lots at the same venue, from Saturday, 08 September, 2018 to Monday, 10th September, 2018, viewing times being 12.00 – 17.00 PDT on all three days. A total of 503 lots will be on offer at the auctions consisting an array of jewels such as bracelets & bangle bracelets, brooches, earclips & earrings, necklaces, pendants, parures and demi-parures, rings and wristwatches, set with colored and colorless diamonds, colored gemstones such as emeralds, rubies, sapphires, amethysts, aquamarine, citrine, onyx, tourmaline, turquoise, lapis lazuli, quartz, agate and organic gemstones such as natural and cultured pearls, corals, mother-of-pearl and seed pearls, the metals used being gold, platinum and silver.

Another significant jewel created by Van Cleef & Arpels, New York, faithful to the very first Alhambra jewel created in 1968, is LOT 388 – AN 18K GOLD ‘ALHAMBRA’ NECKLACE, Van Cleef & Arpels, New York – with an estimate of US$ 18,000 – 25,000 (£ 14,000 – 19,000). The necklace of length 32 1/8 ins. (81.6 cm)  signed VCA, N.Y no.4K848-213, is designed as a series of yellow gold clover leaves, adorned with a border of golden beads, considered as icons of luck, linked together by yellow gold link chains. Gross weight of necklace approximately 63 grams.

Lot 284 is a creation by Verdura, the renowned New York based American Fine Jeweler founded in 1939 by Duke Fulco de Verdura. Verdura was the first jeweler to promote the use of colored stones with gold for everyday wear. The Lot titled, A ROSE QUARTZ BEAD, CULTURED PEARL, RUBY, DIAMOND AND 18K GOLD NECKLACE, Verdura, has a pre-sale estimate of US$ 8,000 – 12,000 (£ 6,200 – 9,300). The necklace of length 17 ins (43.2 cm), signed Verdura has a pendant made up of a drop-shaped rose quartz bead at the lower end and an inverted drop-shaped white cultured pearl at the point of suspension from the necklace, separated by a marquise-shaped ruby and old brilliant-cut diamonds set yellow gold spacer. The sequence of rose quartz beads and spacers in the necklace is two elongated oval or oblong shaped rose quartz beads followed by a single ruby and diamond-set spacer.

The bracelet of length 7 ¼ ins (18.42 cm) signed Schluep, is designed as an openwork maze of yellow gold rectangles and squares of various sizes, set with alternating large and small old brilliant-cut diamonds along one border, alternating emeralds and old brilliant-cut diamonds along the other border and only small old brilliant-cut diamonds in the center.  Estimated total weight of diamonds is 1.90 carats. Gross weight of bracelet approximately 107 grams.
